Kids Already Over Their Christmas Gifts? Try These Fun Alternatives

Screen-free, low-stress play ideas to keep kids busy long after the wrapping paper is gone

By Kenyon Gatlin December 27, 2025

Tell me I’m not alone here… It hasn’t even been that long since Christmas morning, and somehow the shiny new toys have already lost their sparkle. Kids really do have the attention span of a caffeinated squirrel — one day it’s the Best Toy Ever… the next day it’s decorating the floor.

So if your kids are already bored and asking for screens, here are some easy, low-prep, screen-free activities to keep them busy (and you sane):

1. Toy Rotation — The Magic Trick That Works Every Time

Instead of keeping everything out, tuck half the toys away for a week or two.
When you bring them back? Instant excitement — like Christmas morning all over again.

Works best with: blocks, dolls, cars, pretend play sets

2. Create a “Yes Space”

Lay out a blanket or rug and declare it the Yes Zone — everything on the blanket is fair game for creative mess.

Ideas to include:

  • Magnatiles or blocks
  • Puzzles
  • Play food
  • Train tracks

Kids love boundaries… especially playful ones.

3. DIY Obstacle Course

Indoor energy buster — no equipment needed.

Think:

  • Pillows to hop over
  • Tape lines on the floor to balance on
  • A laundry basket “finish line”

Bonus: Time them (they’ll repeat it 12 more times).

4. Real-Life Helper Jobs

Kids LOVE to “help.” We use a toddler tower every day with my 22 month old. She LOVES it.

Try:

  • Putting clothes into the washer then dryer
  • Sorting socks
  • Stirring things in the kitchen
  • Wiping cabinets with a damp cloth
  • Matching lids to containers
  • Watering plants

They feel important. You get help. Win-win.

5. Cardboard Box Creations

Got delivery boxes? You’ve got hours of play.

Turn boxes into:

  • A rocket ship
  • Ice-cream shop
  • Vet clinic
  • Car wash for stuffed animals

Add markers + stickers = magic.

6. Kitchen Station Play

Set up a safe “mini kitchen lab.”

Ideas:

  • Mixing water + food coloring
  • Scooping dry rice into cups
  • Washing play dishes

Perfect for toddlers through preschoolers.

7. Family Game Time (Without the Board Games)

Try these classics:

  • Simon Says
  • Freeze Dance
  • Hide & Seek
  • Hot & Cold (find the hidden object)

Zero setup. Maximum giggles.

8. Quiet Basket for Reset Moments

Create a small basket filled with:

  • Books
  • Fidgets
  • Stuffed animals
  • Coloring pads

Pull it out when things feel chaotic. Works wonders.

9. Bring the Playground Home

Use what you have:

  • Couch cushions
  • Painter’s tape paths
  • Rolling balls
  • Pretend “stoplights”

Great for burning winter energy indoors.

10. Start a Family Challenge

Make it silly!

  • Who can build the tallest tower?
  • Who can find 5 blue things?
  • Who can hop on one foot the longest?

Kids LOVE a challenge.

A gentle reminder

Kids don’t actually need more toys — they need:
✔ imagination
✔ novelty
✔ connection
✔ movement

And sometimes? Just your voice narrating play lights up their whole world.

Screens have their place — but when you want a break from them, these simple activities truly work.
