Featured Reader: Vanessa Freeman

A quick Q and A with one of our busy Macaroni Moms!

By Harlisha Homer March 24, 2011

This issue's Featured Reader is Vanessa Freeman. She and her mate are raising 16-month-old Dylan. One of the things I value as a mother is hearing what works for other mothers, so I asked Vanessa to share what works for her:

Tell us your favorite thing to do with your child?

We enjoy cooking, coloring, reading, and  playing in the sandbox at Lupe Tortilla!

What's your favorite family-friendly attraction in Houston?

The Children's Museum of Houston

And your favorite kid-friendly restaurant?

Lupe Tortilla and Tia Maria's

Vanessa, how do you balance work and family?

My parents are a great help to me!

How long have you been with your mate? What makes a good date night for you?

We've been together for three years. Our best date nights are simple - dinner and a movie!

And do you ever get to hang out the girls?

Yes. We mostly go to Tia Maria's because it's kid-friendly.

So Vanessa - what's your go-to meal when you have to get food on the table quickly?

We do macaroni and cheese with sausage.

And we all get overwhelmed sometimes. What's your favorite "me-time" activity?

A man-pedi is a great stress reliever for me. For dad? Fishing.

So, if you could have a personal mom's assistant, what would you have her do?

I would have her clean my house. (editor's note: so would I!)

What is the one thing that works for you as a parent?

Having my son on a schedule has really paid off. It allows me to be able to schedule events and activities around his schedule, because it's predictable.

So, you find time to volunteer. Where?

Well, we have enjoyed our experience so much at Kids R Kids Greatwood that we have decided to volunteer there. We also volunteer at our church, River Pointe Church.

Vanessa, it really sounds as if you love being a mom. What else would you like to share?

I keep current on parenting by reading parenting books and magazines. I also love allowing my son to experience fun children's activities in the Houston area. (editor's note: we hope Macaroni Kid helps you with those!)

I'd like to thank Vanessa for participating as our first Featured Reader!
