Discovery Green

Out and About with Macaroni Kid - Discover this Downtown Houston Gem!

June 2, 2011

Discovery Green is Houston’s downtown park space. How can I describe it best? It is, quite simply, an urban retreat from the go-go hustle-and-bustle of city life.

Picture it…

  • A lake, with mini-sailboats.
  • Uniquely designed playground.
  • Walking trail.
  • Park benches.
  • Flowers.
  • Fountains.
  • Art pieces.
  • Restaurants.
  • Concert stages.
  • A hill for lounging about.
  • All this, in one space.
  • And it's so clean, too!

Know before you go:

  • Limited metered street parking is available around the perimeter of the park. Downtown metered parking is $1.25 per hour, or $6.00 for the day. It is free to park on Sundays, and after 6pm.
  • Garage parking is also available.
  • When there is an event or if it’s a beautiful weekend day, the park tends to get pretty crowded.
  • For a great time, pack a picnic and enjoy the outdoor air. But, if you don’t, there is a casual restaurant on the premises. The food court in the Park Shops is a short two blocks away.
  • The park hosts concerts and other special events, as well as fitness activities such as yoga, Zumba, and kid’s fitness classes. Check their calendar for current classes and updates.
  • There is a mini-branch of the Houston Public Library on the premises.
  • In the winter months, the lake transforms into an ice skating rink.
  • Their is a dog park on the premises.
  • Kids can run through the fountains, but certain rules apply. Bring dry clothes, a towel, and water shoes.
