Many of the Macaroni Kid events feature, well, colored macaroni! We've used them to make bracelets, necklaces, glasses, headbands, frames, and even gold medals!
It is super easy, and not at all time-consuming, to do this at home. Here's the recipe for colored macaroni:
Ingredients:
Rubbing alcohol
Food Coloring
Pasta of your choice (any brand works, but it needs to be white-flour based, not whole wheat)
Zippered plastic bag of your choice
Pour 2-3 capfuls of alcohol into the zippered bag. Add 3-4 drops of food coloring to the alcohol. Then, pour half of the box of pasta into the colored mixture, adding only a little at a time (add a little, mix some... add some more pasta, mix some, until you've added half the box). Seal the plastic bag and mix more, until you've reached the desired hue (add more food coloring, if you like). Let it sit for an additional five minutues or so, pour it out on newspaper or layered paper towels to dry. Allow about 20-30 minutes for pasta to dry.
Use caution - it will stain clothing, hands, and countertops.
