Dinosaurs! at the Houston Zoo

Our experience with the dinosaurs, currently visiting the Houston Zoo

By Harlisha Homer June 14, 2012
Dinosaurs! presented by Orkin is a special exhibit at the Houston Zoo. Now through September, zoo visitors can visit life-like replicas of the pre-historic creatures.

My Family's Visit

I took my youngest son and my oldest child to the zoo just to see the exhibit. Let me first say that my oldest and I experienced a version of this exhibit back in 2010, so we had an idea of what to expect. This was my youngest son's first visit to the exhibit. He's five, and he was very excited about it.

That is... until we stepped inside the exhibit.

He caught a glimpse of the creatures, and he realized how life-like they were. The design of the dinosaurs was amazingly realistic - so much so that my son was a bit taken aback. Well, he was downright scared, and let me know it. But the kind zoo employee (I should have gotten his name..) reassured him that they were just pretend - and even touched one to prove it.

After our little fear delay, we kept moving through the exhibit. My oldest and I agreed that the dinosaurs were even more life-like than the last exhibit. They also move, roar, and even spit water. My son had fun identifying some of the species' that he'd seen on TV. The signs included were informative, and we learned that some of the featured species were once found here in Texas. Imagine that! In all, we had a great time exploring, and found it to be worth the extra $3 (the cost of the exhibit).

Know Before You Go

  • As stated previously, the exhibit costs $3, in addition to your zoo admission. You must purchase your exhibit ticket at the front gate or on line. You will be unable to purchase tickets at the exhibit.
  • No touching the creatures.
  • As stated, the dinosaurs are quite realistic, but there's nothing scary about them (despite my own son's reaction). The exhibit is appropriate for all ages.
  • There is a gift shop at the end of the exhibit. There is also a photo-taking opportunity. Consider these if you are budget conscious.
  • The entire exhibit takes about 15 minutes - maybe a few more if you are planning to read each sign.
  • The Dinosaurs! exhibit is located on the right side of the zoo. After entering, head toward the right and walk through the birds (but, just in case, there are signs pointing toward the exhibit).
The Houston Zoo is located at 6200 Hermann Park Drive, Houston.
