Try the Houston Musuem of Natural Science - Sugar Land

Activity Idea

February 13, 2014
The Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land opened its doors in October 2009, and serves as a museum experience that's more accessible to Fort Bend area residents.

The building also has some history. It was once the Central State Prison Farm. From 1939 - 1968, the facility housed inmates (mostly African American), as well as prison administrative offices, laundry facilities and a school house. This is an interesting historical tidbit that you can share with your children.

What should I do there?
The highlights of our recent visit included the paleontology display, as well as the Science on a Sphere exhibit and the gems. There is also a Dig Pit (we didn't do this) and a digital dome theater. (more photos here)

30-second review: If you are expecting the full-fledged displays found in the Houston Museum of Natural Science in Houston, this is not that. It's smaller version, with its own strengths. We enjoyed our visit. My children genuinely liked all the exhibits, and the fact our visit didn't feel rushed. It was not crowded, and the museum is spacious, but just small enough that my children could do different things and I could easily keep track of their whereabouts.

Is it easy to access? Yes. It is less than a mile from 59 South. The parking is easy, free, and plentiful.

Time allotment: Depending on the interests of your children, a visit to this museum would take around two hours, max. It's great for a morning or afternoon.

Location: 13016 University Blvd, Sugar Land, TX 77479

Cost: Adults $12 | Children (3 - 11), Seniors (62+) and College Students $9

Information: Houston Museum of Natural Science Sugar Land website.

My children and I received complimentary admission to the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land for the purpose of this article. Any opinions expressed are mine (or my children's).
